Chapter 19
“As much as I love our family and friends, I am so glad everyone decided to call it a day early. I can barely keep my eyes open to watch the games,” Michael joked after he walked into the kitchen and wrapped his arms around Karli’s waist. Smiling down at her, he kissed her on the cheek. “Thanksgiving dinner was great. You did an excellent job, and you were a wonderful hostess.”
Karli smiled and patted his arm. “Thank you, sweetie.”
Michael looked around and saw that she had cleaned up nearly all the dishes and had packed away the food in containers. He picked up a couple of the containers and began to walk toward the refrigerator.
“No, baby. Those don’t go in the fridge.” She pointed to the breakfast table. “Those over there go in the fridge. You can put those away.”
Michael sat down the containers he was holding and walked to the breakfast table. He picked up the containers there and headed back to the refrigerator, looking confused. “So who are those other ones for? I thought everyone took plates with them when they left.”
Karli turned on the water in the sink to rinse off the sponge. “Those are for one of my new employees. They just recently moved and had no one to cook for them. I told them I’d bring them some of our food.”
Michael smiled. “That’s sweet. You could’ve invited them over.”
She put away the dish detergent and the sponge before she looked over at Michael. “I did. They didn’t want to intrude, but I insisted on bringing them food, which they gladly accepted.”
Michael shrugged and continued putting away the food as Karli ran upstairs to change. She slipped on her low-rise jeans, her UGG boots, and a wrap sweater and checked herself in the mirror. She sprayed on some perfume and headed back downstairs. She passed by Michael, who was now sitting on the sofa, watching football.
“Whoa! Wait. You’re leaving tonight to take them the food?” he asked with a slight attitude.
Karli paused, turned, and walked back over to the sofa. “Be nice. It’s Thanksgiving. I want to spend a little time and give them the food while it’s still fresh.”
Karli noticed that Michael was about to protest, so she bent over and delivered a supple kiss on his lips. “I shouldn’t be too terribly long.”
“I know. I just wanted to snuggle up with you and have our own alone time.”
He sighed and decided to give up his argument. He knew it’d be a losing battle, anyway. Even though they had supposedly forgiven each other, made love, and were now talking to each other, their relationship was still extremely rocky. Michael had hoped the bad times were all behind them, but even the simplest of mishaps tended to spark intense arguments and snappy attitudes. At least for the holiday, he wanted peace in their house and no arguing with his wife. God, how he wished he could have his old thing back.
He rubbed his forefinger along her chin.
